Vail Katal Shoot

Just got back from shooting up at Vail with Katal Innovations. They make the airbag landing pad that's used in a ton of Olympic and contest training.

The idea behind it is genius. The Katal pad provides a super mellow landing so riders can practice for big hits, and get more comfortable in the air.

Thanks for reading, more to come soon.

Staying on track...

Just wrapped up a website for a friend. We put together some sweet ideas, and his artwork is amazing. Here's the layout I came up with:

We did a shoot for the 'My Story' page, we're just getting it all put together. This artwork is a whole different form of artwork that has purpose and medicinal purpose. Check soon for the website to be finished. I'll post a link when it's all done.

It's been snowing hard in Colorado, and we've been taking advantage of it. Lots of shooting. More photos to come. Busy next few weeks to come.

Back on the blogwagon.

It's been nearly 6 months since my last post. Depressing, I know. But I'm finally settled in Boulder, and have been shooting a ton since I've been down here. The primary reason for the relocation to Boulder was to focus a lot more on my photography on the snowboard side of things. So far, this place has given me the some amazing results behind the lens.

I post pretty frequently to my Facebook page, but I'm definitely getting back into the writing part of things. I have a year of journalism background under my belt, and I want to utilize it. After all, "if you don't use it, you lose it."

Although I don't plan on writing a novel every week, I do plan on having a new photo that you haven't seen with a story to go along with it. Every week. I know I've promised before, but this time it's serious. It's winter time in Boulder, and I'm in the most beautiful place on earth.

This week's photo is pulled from the archives. I got the privilege to be the photographer for a friend's wedding (Nick and Ashlee Gregory) and all night I was looking to get a shot of these precious eyes that I had seen wandering the whole time. One of my favorite photos I've taken, this one captures a beautiful moment in time. Enjoy.

I still miss a ton of things back home: friends, family, memories, and a lot more. It's great here in Boulder, and I'm absolutely in love with it here, but Dorothy really nailed it on the head - "There's no place like home."

Thanks so much for reading, and check back next week for a new post.

Summer time.

Spent the day in Sandpoint by the beach with Natalie. Hot summer days bring beautiful summer lighting. iPhone's got summer photo lighting dialed as well. Check this edit, straight from CameraBag (iPhone app)

Weekend winding down and the week about to start up. Slammed busy, but watch for more posts. Thanks to all who followed the weeklong photo project. Having more time dedicated to photos has definitely sparked some new creativity. Just as planned.

Day of Independence (and Day 7)

First try at a fireworks photo, and pleased with the results.

[My very first attempt, no tripod]

[After tinkering with it for a few shots.]

Definitely had a sweet 4th. Friend of a friend invited us out to a party out on Lake Pend Oreille, who made some arrangements to have one of the most legit fireworks displays in the area. Huge barge with some big money invested in pyrotechnics.

Friday (Day 6)

Went out to Ben's house for a day on the lake. Had to pull a few logs downwind so the girls chose to go log-riding.

Can't beat a day out on the lake. BBQ and burgers to follow. Yum.

Playing with flashes.

Thanks Glenn and Nik for letting me borrow your flashes. Had some fun with them and added some good stuff to the photo project portfolio.

Realized tonight that I really haven't shot my car with any sort of creative photographic intention. Tonight I did.

Results from the real intention of tonight's flash shoot coming soon. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned.

Photo Project

It's still in the works, but here's a teaser. I won't tell you what it's about, or what it's for. Yet. Just wait for the finished product.

Stay tuned. Should be complete in a week or so. Until then, keep a look out for my other project, Photo-a-Day for which I've got three days under my belt.

Here's one I got from the iPhone from the same morning as this one of Stapleton.

Car-podding

Setting up a stable tripod in the back of the car has potential. Vehicle ideas are fun, and the possibilities are coming to me. Stay tuned; for now, check this out. It's rough but try to imagine potential. The possibilities are going crazy in my head.

Photo(s)-A-Day Project

Today marks my Photo-A-Day blog project beginning. I'm behind the camera a lot more lately, so I'm gonna try this project out.

Wakeboarding today, Shea snapped his deck landing heavy on a scarecrow. Take a look.

Had to get Cali a frogskin shot too. Enjoy.

Stay tuned for the PaD proj.

Thanks,
Tim

Rough week.

Last weekend I headed over to Seattle to see my dad for Father's Day. First solo trip in a while, and although different, I kinda liked it; I had a lot of thinking time to myself.

Recently I came across an app for iPhone called DSLR Remote. Much like iPhone's Remote app for iTunes, the DSLR Remote is a wireless shutter button. Check out their website for more info. Basically you hook up your camera to your computer via USB cable and establish a network from your computer. Connect your iPhone (or iPod touch) to the network and open the app. You can manage all of your camera settings including shutter speed, ISO, aperture, exporting, etc.

On the way back from Seattle, I set up the tripod in the back seat of my car and tethered the camera to my laptop in the front seat. Just like that, I was snapping shots with a preview sent right to my phone. Here's what turned out.

Sunday (Father's Day) had an ending nobody saw coming. We lost one of our friends, a member of our family, Hunter Graham (story here). We're heading to his memorial service now. We will miss you dearly Hunter. Prayers and tears today.

It's been too long.

So it has been more than two months since my last post, but now that I have steady internet and I'm all settled, I'll be posting more.

Little preview for the summer. Let the season begin!

I'm really anxious to get into wakeboard photography this summer. I've got plans to be at a ton of events and functions, so stay posted for my summer journey.

There's No Place Like Home.

"There's no place like home. There's no place like home..."

We went over to the Beta house (Dan and Nate's frat) and smoked some hookah (its only tobacco folks). Grabbed this shot of Nikhil blowing a ring. Leave for home tomorrow. Surprise in store for the flight blog home.

Thanks for reading.

Stomped it out.

This weekend I was up shooting the Stomp Games, an event up at Schweitzer hosting a rail jam, a slopestyle event, and a ridercross event. Saturday's weather put a damper on the riders' ability to throw down, thus making it a little difficult to get shots. The rail jam on Friday was another story. Crazy disaster cork 5's and disaster rodeo 3's were goin' down, making it a sick show.

I've got more shots, so email me [timsorenson@gmail.com] if you're interested.

After the slopestyle Saturday, we went to Luke's condo for a bit, where I grabbed this one of Jasper.

I got to hike the entire slopestyle course Sunday; lucky me. I did manage to post up at the cannon-box to get a good angle on Evan's run.

Drove down Sunday night to Salt Lake City with the Maus brothers, and I'll be home Thursday. Look for pics in the next few days.

Thanks,
- Tim

Shock Therapy

Last night Nik and I got to shoot the Spokane Shock's first preseason game. We're doing a story on a Shock dancer that attends NIC, so we were able to get field-side to get in on the action. Dan Couillard (Blog) (MySpace) let me borrow his 40D and 16-35 so I could be strapped with a wide body and a tele body (Thanks again Dan). My new 17-35 didn't get to get used last night, but in good time.

**Shooting the Stomp Games up at Schweitzer this weekend, so let me know if you'll be riding** and I'll pay extra attention. Photo rates are cheap; just get in touch with me and we'll work something out - timsorenson@gmail.com

Here's a few of my favorites from the Shock game last night.

It was a great game, and the Shock won 35-28, against Arkansas. Shooting a Jazz concert tonight, look for photos later. Thanks for reading.

On the 14th day, he rose again.

Not comparing myself to God with the blog title, but I'm finally at about 95% recovered from probably the most miserable sickness I've come across. Mix congestion, sore throat, nausea and all-over body aches together and multiply it by thirty, and you'll be somewhere near the point I was at. Anyway, enough complaining. Yesterday, I picked up the Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4.

iPhone shot of the new edition to the family. Finally a good wide and a good tele in the bag.

I dug up this photo from our trip to Tahoe. Group shot at Paradise Summit, Nevada.

NIC also hosted both the men's and women's NJCAA Region 18 Basketball Tournament. The Cardinal men didn't make it to the championship, unfortunately, but it was a great run. Nik and I covered the entire weekend, and here's a shot I got of the NIC bench in the final minutes of their loss against Eastern Utah.

On the other hand, the Lady Cards' proved victorious, and won the Region 18 tournament. It was truely a nail biting game, and the girls came back from a 19 point defecit to beat CSI. Fortunately, I got a shot worthy of Jake's front-page dominant photo mindset. (Long story inside the news room.)

This issue was the one taken to NYC for the college media convention. I just got off the phone with Scott Fink, our news editor, and was informed that we took Best in Show (1st Place) for 2-year papers.

Although I haven't posted in the last two weeks, I have been doing a ton of work with photos. I took some product shots for Local 77, and here's a little series I put together for the DC Siloh Boot.

Anyway, big stuff going on this week. Surprises are fun though, so I won't tell you exactly what's in store. Stay tuned to the blog and you'll find out soon enough.

Thanks for reading, and I promise I won't get on another two-week dryspell.

He asked for it.

Glenn requested to see something wide; something to see where we are [in Tahoe]. I thought at the same time that I'd like to test the iPhone's panoramic capabilities. I think you'll be impressed.

Stepped off the back porch for this one. It's snowing more and more here in Tahoe, and it might keep us here longer than expected.

Today was a great day. We went to Northstar, and although it was a bit wet today, we had a ton of fun. We hit up the famous Northstar stash, and if I say anything more about it I could ruin it, so you'll have to discover it yourself if you're lucky enough. Hands down the greatest rhythm I've ever felt, even more than Elvis, the Beegees or Marvin Gaye.

We got home and dried off and watched a movie, recovered from the awe of Northstar and thoughts of our next Tahoe trip bounced back and forth through our minds.

On a lot of internet browsing in my off time I've learned a tweak or two with lighting. Tonight I tried getting some more flash-style light with a softer dispursement. Try figuring out what this is, and how I shot it. You'll be amazed.

Ok ready for the secret? Here it is. 20 second exposure to start it off. Flashlight as a light source. 31mm focal length. F/11 with an ISO at 100.

I had the tripod Gabe lent me set up shooting downward on my wide-angle filter for the 18-55 on the carpet. The texture of the carpet was cool, so I thought it would be cool to illuminate it with a flashlight, to bring a softer approach to things, rather than a harsh, blow-it-in-your-face flash. I rolled the flashlight along the carpet in a circular path around the lens filter to silouhette and then elevated the light for another pass to get the depth of the lens filter. I really like what it produced.

On a family-styled note, I remember pictures of my dad in California when he was my age; the poloroid-style, warm, California-style beach shot. Here's mine from Lake Tahoe.

Final closing note [for now at least]: No clue as to what lays ahead for our route home, but here's a self port I took at 3:20 this morning of me 'thinking' about it.

Tahoe Photo Ideas

Tahoe is unbelieveable, and unfortunatlely the weather today didn't cooperate with photos, so I had to bring the shooting indoors. The rain in today's forecast put a damper on activities, but we did get to Bowl Incline to toss some balls down a lane. iPhone managed to grab a shot. Nothing really clicked photo-wise at the alley.

After we got back from Bowl Incline, we sat down, ate a pizza and watched some t.v., when I got the idea for a flash light shot. Let me know what you think.

I got another one of Calin. Some weird things popped out in these photos. Try to find hidden features.

So much here is what I want. It seems like home, and I can't even explain why. Next trip: Boulder. We need to weigh our options. On the agenda tomorrow? Northstar snowboarding. Look for photos tomorrow night.

"Thanks for reading everyone." - [Tim Sorenson]

First day in Tahoe: Riding Boreal

Got up this morning after a long drive yesterday and hit up Boreal, a sick, smaller mountain with a great variety of features. The trip has been amazing so far, and Tahoe is definitely my future home. Everyone here is so chill and laid back, it's like Nelson, but the U.S. version.

Here are a few shots I snapped today at Boreal. Tomorrow's agenda: Northstar. Tonight's agenda: No clue yet.

Shea with a switch 50, back 1 out.

Shea and Calin on the lift above the park at Boreal.

Look for more pics and stories soon.

Thanks,

- Tim

From the road.

The alarms woke us at 5 and of course we don't hit the road until 6:30. Things are going great so far, and we seem to be getting a lot of funny looks. Maybe you could tell me why.

I've been taking a lot of photos this trip, and plenty more to come. Stay tuned.

[Recurring] Memories of Nelson

Just running through Lightroom and found a photo that I wanted to throw a vintage feel on. Here she is; let me know what you think.

Here's the camera settings. I think posting this will help me become more aware of my settings.

Thanks for reading. Now it's time to clean the car out for the trip. What an undertaking.

Buttermilking.

Today only, IHOPs around the country are offering free pancakes with the suggestion of a donation to the Children's Miracle Network. The money stays locally and benefits children in Coeur d'Alene, based on the information provided by the IHOP employee that handed us the brochure.

Here's a shot I snapped on the iPhone of my free, delectable pancakes.

Kirk Mastin has inspired my iPhone photo intrigue. Thanks Kirk.

What's next?

A lot has been going on getting for our trip next week. We'll be heading Thursday morning to San Diego, where the National College Media Convention is being held. On our way down, Shea, Zack, Calin and I are going to stop in Tahoe for a few days, drive down to San Diego and then come back through Vegas and SLC making it an epic trip to say the least. I'll have my travel kit (battery chargers for laptop, iPhone and both of my cameras) so look for posts as our journey unfolds.

On Thursday I headed up and got some shots of Dash at Schweitzer. Here are a few shots I snapped.

After some riding, we headed to Thor's and got some pizza. Check out Thor's if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed. Best pizza this side of the Mississippi.

I've been shooting a lot lately, and it gets more and more fun everytime. I shot this one at the NIC Men's Basketball game against CNCC. Great game, and my sports shoot with the new lens. I'm loving it.

The newest issue of the Sentinel came out on Tuesday, and I was fortunate enough to get a front page shot (look familiar?) and a shot I got of Andrew Draper (even though it ran b&w) turned out great on the Life Sports page.

This was a great issue. NIC doesn't appreciate Jake Donahue (our managine editor at Sentinel) as much as they need to. Our entire staff works together to make our paper #1. Great design work on this one Jake, and nothing gets me more stoked than the way this issue came together with everyone's help.
